Growth and reach
Since launching in 2017, the Technician Commitment has grown from 36 founding signatories into a global community of over 150 organisations championing technicians and their contributions to higher education and research across all disciplines.
Today, the Technician Commitment is an international community of practice spanning six countries, bringing together institutions, technical leaders and sector partners to share learning, drive organisational change and strengthen support for technical professionals.
This continued growth reflects a sustained sector-wide commitment to recognising technical expertise as a core component of research, teaching and innovation.
Impact and action
Over the past nine years, signatories and supporters have used the Technician Commitment to take practical action to improve the visibility, recognition, career development and long-term sustainability of technical professionals.
More than 100 institutional submissions have now been reviewed through the Technician Commitment process, identifying over 3,500 actions to improve support for technical staff across participating organisations. These actions demonstrate the breadth of work taking place across the sector, from strengthening technical career pathways and building institutional networks to improving recognition, representation and access to professional development.
This progress has also been recognised through the Technician Commitment awards process, with 70 institutions receiving Impact Awards for sustained progress and positive change.
At the heart of this process is a strong culture of peer learning and continuous improvement. The Technician Commitment Peer Review College now includes more than 100 trained reviewers, whose insight and expertise supports institutions to reflect on their progress, strengthen their action plans and turn their commitments into practical improvements.
Community and collaboration
Collaboration has always been central to the Technician Commitment. Since 2021, the Technician Commitment Collaboration Fund has supported 27 technician-led projects, empowering over 100 higher education institutions, research institutes and industry partners to share knowledge, test new approaches to supporting technical staff and strengthen connections across the sector.
These projects have shown how small-scale funding can support wider impact, from technical conferences and networking events to shared training, placement exchanges, development opportunities and cross-institutional communities of practice.
The Technician Commitment has also continued to champion technical professionals on a national stage. For eight years, the Technician Commitment has proudly sponsored the Outstanding Technician of the Year category at the Times Higher Education Awards, helping to drive visibility and recognition of technical excellence across higher education.
These achievements reflect only part of the Technician Commitment’s impact. Across the community, signatories and supporters have used the Commitment to build new networks, strengthen institutional action plans, raise the profile of technical roles and create new opportunities for technical professionals to develop and thrive.
The ninth anniversary is an opportunity to recognise this collective progress and thank the signatories, supporters, peer reviewers, Technician Commitment leads, technical leaders and technical professionals who have helped shape the Commitment into the community it is today.
Dr Kelly Vere MBE, Director of the Technician Commitment, said:
“The progress made through the Technician Commitment over the past nine years is testament to the dedication of our signatories, supporters and the wider technical community.
"Technical professionals make vital contributions to higher education, research and innovation, and it is encouraging to see so many organisations taking practical action to improve visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for technical roles.
"As the Commitment continues to grow internationally, we look forward to building on this progress and supporting organisations to create lasting, meaningful change for technical professionals.”
The Technician Commitment team would like to thank every signatory, supporter, reviewer, lead and member of the technical community who has contributed to this progress over the past nine years.
