QCIF Digital Research Signs the Technician Commitment

We are proud to announce that the Queensland Cyber Infrastructure Foundation (QCIF) has become one of the first Australian non-university research organisations to sign the Technician Commitment, marking a significant milestone in recognising and supporting the role of the technical workforce in enabling world-class research.

Scientific breakthroughs rarely happen in isolation. They are made possible by a broader ecosystem of highly skilled specialists whose expertise supports research at every stage, from design and data generation to analysis to translational outputs and impact.

This is the work QCIF staff deliver every day, and it is essential to their mission of enabling research impact through cutting-edge infrastructure and services.

QCIF's scientists and engineers deserve greater visibility, recognition and long-term investment.

Building a Roadmap for a Sustainable Technical Workforce

The Technician Commitment is an internationally recognised initiative designed to improve the visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability of the technical professionals working across higher education and research.

It provides a practical framework for recognising, developing and retaining  technical talent as an integral part of the research ecosystem.

Technician Commitment Programme Director Kelly Vere MBE commented:

We warmly welcome QCIF to the Technician Commitment Community. The increased interest we've had from the international community is testament to the positive impact the Technician Commitment has had on shaping the technical workforce in higher education and research. We look forward to supporting QCIF’s journey in enhancing the visibility and career development of their technical workforce and sharing valuable insights across our growing community.”

QCIF CEO Sach Jayasinghe said:

QCIF has always recognised the criticality of its workforce and has already made significant inroads in supporting our talent aligned with the ethos of the Technician Commitment. By joining the Technician Commitment, we are looking to accelerate QCIF efforts and inspire peer research organisations.”

As a signatory, QCIF will work closely with colleagues from the UK Institute for Technical Skills and Strategy (ITSS) and the QCIF staff and stakeholders to co-design a 24-month action plan that will define tangible, measurable actions to further strengthen how technical professionals are supported, developed and recognised within QCIF.

Mr Jayasinghe added:

The Action Plan will not be an isolated initiative. It will be fully embedded in the overall 3-year QCIF Strategic Plan that is currently being formulated.”

Through this pledge, QCIF also joins the Technician Commitment’s global network of more than 112 universities and research institutes, creating opportunities for collaboration, shared learning and the exchange of best practices.
