IChemE becomes a Technician Commitment supporter – expanding career development pathways for technicians and launching work-based learner memberships.

We are delighted to welcome The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) to the Technician Commitment supporter community, reinforcing their dedication to recognising and supporting the vital contribution of technicians and process operatives across the chemical and process industries.

This commitment aligns with IChemE’s strategic objective to support an increasing number and diversity of members by delivering an enhanced member experience that benefits everyone working in, and contributing to, the sector. As a Technician Commitment supporter, IChemE will focus on creating meaningful impact in key areas such as career development, sustainability, visibility, recognition and celebration of the technical community – ensuring technicians and process operatives are valued and empowered as an integral part of the chemical engineering profession.

In a move that directly supports the aims of the Technician Commitment, IChemE is also launching a new membership category for work-based learners. This category, aimed primarily at apprentices and others on vocational learning and development pathways, offers a tailored route into professional membership – including access to tailored resources, development opportunities and a clear progression pathway towards Engineering Technician (EngTech) status.

Like IChemE’s existing student membership category, the new work-based learner membership will be free of charge, ensuring accessibility and removing barriers for early-career technicians. Members will benefit from the full suite of IChemE member benefits and services, alongside dedicated support tailored to their career stage and ambitions.

Dr Rachel Bibby, Director of Membership Experience and Knowledge said: “By recognising the unique needs of technical professionals and widening the benefits of membership, IChemE continues to support the development of a diverse, skilled and resilient engineering workforce – one that is essential for addressing the complex global challenges of today and tomorrow.”

Work-based learner membership provides access to a wealth of resources designed to support studies and career progression, including learning materials, networking opportunities and professional development tools. Find out more and apply for work-based membership

Simon Breeden, Technician Commitment Associate Lead, added: “Engineering technicians are a vital workforce that play a critical role in UK research, industry, innovation and teaching. Welcoming IChemE as a supporter of the Technician Commitment means that more technical professionals within the associated disciplines will benefit from being part of this global community.”

Richard Holliday, Senior Technician and Vocational Manager at IChemE, said: “Becoming a supporter of the Technician Commitment publicly demonstrates IChemE’s support for the technical community, and this new membership offering is an early example of how we are turning that commitment into action.  Through IChemE membership, technicians and apprentices can access a wealth of learning resources, connect with a strong professional network, and receive guidance and support to achieve Engineering Technician (EngTech) registration.”
