Malaghan Institute becomes New Zealand’s first signatory to the Technician Commitment

The Malaghan Institute of Medical Research has become New Zealand’s first signatory to the internationally-recognised Technician Commitment – an initiative that promotes visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for technical professionals in research and higher education.

Chief Technology Officer Kylie Price says the commitment aligns with the Malaghan’s long-standing commitment to developing its people and recognises the unique and valued role of its technical experts.

“This is about acknowledging the leadership, innovation and stewardship that technical professionals bring to science every day. It builds on the way we already work – enabling people to lead platforms, champion their expertise and be visible as integral contributors to our discovery and translation,” says Kylie.

“Technical professionals support all areas of research at the Malaghan Institute – from flow cytometry and data science, to animal care and clinical sample processing. They design and manage complex platforms, train researchers, ensure reproducibility and develop best-practice methods that underpin our research.”

The Technician Commitment provides structure and international alignment to these efforts, ensuring technical staff have opportunities for recognition, professional development and long-term career sustainability.

As the first New Zealand signatory, the Malaghan hopes to encourage other research organisations to sign up and help build a national community of technical professionals who are recognised, supported, and celebrated.

“Our technical experts are key to enabling transformative science,” says Kylie. “By strengthening how we recognise and support their work, we strengthen our ability to achieve a future where disease is prevented, treated and cured through the power of the immune system.”

Kelly Vere, Programme Director, Technician Commitment said: “We are delighted to welcome the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research to our community of over 130 signatories and supporters. As an international signatory, they have committed to leading the way for institutions across the globe to advance the visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability of technical skills roles and careers.

“We look forward to supporting their journey.”
